Friendly Rides & Guides Skills Coaching is a mountain biking skills development programme offered by Friendly Rides & Guides, a Lantau Island-based outdoor riding and coaching company in Hong Kong. The service is designed to help cyclists of all ages and abilities improve their mountain biking technique, confidence and trail handling skills through structured coaching sessions, workshops and outdoor riding experiences. The coaching takes place in outdoor environments such as the purpose-built skills park near Mui Wo and other trail locations across Hong Kong. These environments include varied terrain with pump tracks, uneven ground, berms, jump lines and both flowy and technical singletrack trails that allow riders to practise a wide range of skills in real off-road contexts.
The primary aim of Friendly Rides & Guides Skills Coaching is to help riders develop and refine mountain bike handling skills, progressing from fundamental techniques to more advanced trail riding capabilities. The coaching emphasises confidence building on trails, improved bike control, safe riding practices and the ability to tackle increasingly challenging terrain. Rather than simply offering recreational rides, the Skills Coaching programmes are designed to be progressive and results-oriented, helping participants improve specific aspects of their riding — from balance and cornering to jump techniques and speed control — in clearly defined sessions that build on each other.
Friendly Rides & Guides offers multiple formats of skills coaching, including: Technique Workshops and Skill Development Sessions These sessions cover a variety of mountain biking fundamentals and advanced techniques such as speed control, cornering, climbing and descending, berms and switchbacks, manuals, wheel lifts, gap jumping, handling technical obstacles and trail flow management. Sessions can be tailored to the level and goals of the rider. Mastering Trail Courses These are structured courses focused on specific trail grades such as mastering blue, red and black trails. Each course targets skillsets appropriate to the difficulty level of the terrain, helping riders gain confidence and competence on more complex trails. Private Workshops Private technique workshops allow individuals or small groups to work on specific skills or riding goals. These can be half-day or full-day sessions where participants focus deeply on particular aspects of their riding, such as confidence on steep terrain or advanced jump techniques. Mini Shredders and Youth Sessions These multi-day courses are designed for younger riders who want to learn foundational skills in a fun, supportive environment. These include sessions for beginner youth riders and more advanced youth groups, with activities tailored to age-appropriate progression.
Friendly Rides & Guides Skills Coaching is suitable for a wide range of riders:
The programmes are flexible and can be adapted to suit both individual riders and small groups with similar skill levels.
Coaching is delivered by experienced instructors who use professional mountain biking coaching methodologies in outdoor trail settings. Much of the training takes place at the Mui Wo Bike Park skills area — a location with a variety of features suitable for learning and practising bike handling techniques — as well as on other local trails across Hong Kong. Participants are introduced to essential concepts such as proper body positioning, bike setup and equipment selection as part of their coaching. The approach combines hands-on drills, real-time feedback and guided trail rides so that learners can immediately apply new techniques in practice.
Sessions are organised to allow riders to progress from foundational skills toward more advanced techniques. Riders often start with basic body positioning, balance and cornering before moving on to more complex skills such as climbing steep sections, controlling speed in rough terrain, negotiating obstacles and performing jump techniques. Coaching formats vary in duration and intensity, from shorter technique workshops to multi-day youth courses and private full-day sessions. These structured formats help riders focus on particular skill areas while giving them multiple chances to practise and improve.

The coaching experience is aimed at making riders feel more capable and secure while exploring Hong Kong’s outdoor trail networks.
